What kind of roofs do solar panels go on in Paisley?

Almost any pitched roof in reasonable condition — slate over red sandstone is the most common in Paisley.

Paisley's housing stock is varied: red sandstone tenements and terraces through the town centre, mill-era workers' rows and converted thread-mill flats around Anchor and Ferguslie, Victorian and Edwardian villas at Castlehead, Oakshaw and Thornly Park, interwar and post-war semis and bungalows at Ralston, Hunterhill, Glenburn and Foxbar, newer estates at Linwood and Erskine, the Dargavel development at Bishopton, and stone cottages, farmhouses and steadings out toward Lochwinnoch, Howwood and the Renfrewshire hills.

Most panels mount on slate or tile using roof hooks. The fixing method is specified per roof at survey. For the exposed hill-edge farms and cottages above Lochwinnoch, Howwood and Neilston, wind-rated rail systems are used to handle higher wind loads.

The tenement and factored-block question comes up constantly in Paisley. If you live in a flat in a tenement or a converted mill, the roof is almost certainly shared. Solar on that roof needs the roof owner's consent and often the agreement of the other owners through the factor or owners' association. This is the single most common reason a Paisley solar enquiry cannot go ahead, and being straight about it early saves everyone a wasted survey. We check this before booking anything.

How much electricity will solar panels generate in Paisley?

A south-facing 4kWp system produces around 3,300–3,800 kWh a year.

Output depends on orientation, tilt, shading and local weather conditions. South-facing roofs produce the most. East- or west-facing roofs produce roughly 15–20% less but are still worthwhile, especially with a battery to shift surplus generation to the evening. North-facing roofs are not suitable.

At 55.85°N, Paisley is the most southerly town in this network so far. Midday sun height ranges from 11° in December to 57° in June. The long summer days — over 17 hours of daylight at midsummer — generate a surplus that a battery can bank for evening use or overnight.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Paisley?

Usually not — but conservation areas and listed buildings in Paisley are the exception.

Most domestic solar installations in Scotland are permitted development. You do not need to submit a planning application. However, Paisley has several conservation areas — Oakshaw, the Abbey and town centre, Castlehead, and the mill conservation areas — where panels on a visible elevation may require planning consent from Renfrewshire Council. Listed buildings need listed-building consent regardless of location.

We check your address against the conservation area maps before a survey is booked. If consent is needed, the installation partner can advise on the application, but the decision is Renfrewshire Council's. Panels on a non-visible elevation (a rear-facing roof, for example) are sometimes acceptable even within a conservation area, but this varies case by case.

What panels and inverter do you specify?

Jinko Tiger Neo panels with a SolarEdge HD-Wave inverter.

Jinko Tiger Neo is an N-type monocrystalline panel with strong low-light performance — relevant in Paisley where overcast skies are common. The SolarEdge HD-Wave inverter uses panel-level optimisation, which means shading on one panel does not drag down the whole string. That matters on tenement roofs and villa roofs with dormers or chimney stacks casting partial shade.

Warranty: 25-year product warranty and 30-year performance warranty on the panels. Inverter and battery warranties are per the manufacturer's terms, up to 12 years. The MCS certificate is issued by the installation partner on completion.

Solar is not right for every Paisley home

We would rather tell you now than waste your time with a survey.

  • Your only roof faces north with no east or west alternative
  • Heavy shading from neighbouring tenements, mature trees or the hill edge that cannot be resolved
  • You live in a flat without roof ownership or the required consent from other owners and the factor
  • The building is listed and you do not wish to apply for listed-building consent
  • The roof covering is in poor condition and needs replacement before panels can be fitted

Solar panel questions for Paisley

Do solar panels work in Paisley with all the rain?
Yes. Panels generate electricity from daylight, not direct sunshine. Output on an overcast day is lower than in full sun, but it is not zero. Scotland's cooler temperatures actually improve panel efficiency. Paisley has kept its own daily weather record since 1884 at the Coats Observatory on Oakshaw — the data shows the town gets enough daylight to make solar viable on most south-, east- or west-facing roofs. A south-facing 4kWp system here produces around 3,300–3,800 kWh a year.
How much electricity will solar panels generate on my Paisley home?
A south-facing 4kWp system produces around 3,300–3,800 kWh a year in Paisley. East- or west-facing roofs produce roughly 15–20% less. These are typical ranges, not a promise — actual output depends on shading, roof pitch and local conditions. The installation partner confirms projected output at survey.
What panels and inverter do you specify?
Jinko Tiger Neo panels with a SolarEdge HD-Wave inverter. The panels carry a 25-year product warranty and a 30-year performance warranty. The inverter warranty is per the manufacturer's terms, up to 12 years. The SolarEdge system uses panel-level optimisation, which reduces the impact of partial shading — relevant on Paisley roofs with dormers or chimney stacks.
Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Paisley?
Usually not. Most domestic installations are permitted development. However, if your property is in a conservation area — Oakshaw, the Abbey and town centre, Castlehead, or the mill conservation areas — or is a listed building, panels on a visible elevation may need planning or listed-building consent from Renfrewshire Council. We check this before a survey is booked.
What about tenements and shared roofs?
You need consent from all roof owners, which is the most common reason a Paisley enquiry cannot proceed. If you live in a flat in a tenement or converted mill building, the roof is almost certainly shared. Solar panels on that roof need the agreement of the other owners through the factor or owners' association. We check this before booking a survey rather than wasting anyone's time.
What is SP Energy Networks and do I need to notify them?
Yes, every solar installation requires notification to SP Energy Networks (SP Distribution), the network operator for Renfrewshire. Our installation partner handles the G98 or G99 notification and all DNO paperwork on your behalf as part of the standard process.

Already have solar?

Panels in Renfrewshire collect moss, lichen and mill-town grime that rain alone doesn't shift, and the west of Scotland gives you plenty of the diffuse light that makes every clean cell count. A patch of shading on one cell can run hot enough to damage it permanently. Scottish Energy Efficiency runs a monitoring and care plan; details and prices are on the main site.
