How much is the Home Energy Scotland heat pump grant?
Up to £7,500, rising to up to £9,000 with the £1,500 rural and island uplift.
The Home Energy Scotland grant covers part of the cost of an air source heat pump installation. The standard grant is up to £7,500. If your postcode qualifies for the rural and island uplift, an additional £1,500 is available, bringing the total to up to £9,000.
On top of the grant, an optional interest-free loan of up to £7,500 is available through Home Energy Scotland, subject to eligibility. The loan is separate from the grant and does not reduce the grant amount.
You have nine months from the date of the written offer to complete the installation and submit the claim. The installation partner handles the MCS certification and paperwork required for the claim.
Does my Renfrewshire postcode qualify for the rural uplift?
By postcode — Paisley, Renfrew, Johnstone and Erskine do not qualify; parts of rural Renfrewshire past Lochwinnoch and Howwood may.
The rural and island uplift is determined by postcode. Urban areas — Paisley (PA1–PA3), Renfrew (PA4), Johnstone (PA5), Erskine (PA8) — do not qualify. Parts of rural Renfrewshire may qualify: the Lochwinnoch area (PA12), Howwood (PA9), some addresses in Kilbarchan (PA10) and Bridge of Weir (PA11), and the farms and steadings on the Renfrewshire hill edge.

Is a heat pump the right move for oil or LPG homes in Renfrewshire?
For most oil- and LPG-heated homes with reasonable insulation, yes — and the grant makes the numbers work.
Oil and LPG heating persists in rural Renfrewshire — Lochwinnoch, Howwood, the edges of Kilbarchan, the farms and steadings above Neilston and Uplawmoor. These homes are the primary audience for the heat pump grant: they are off the gas grid, their fuel costs are high and volatile, and the grant plus the optional loan can cover a substantial share of the installation cost.
A heat pump replaces the boiler and heats the home from outside air. It works year-round, including in Scottish winters. The key requirement is that the property has adequate insulation — cavity wall, loft insulation, double glazing at a minimum. If the insulation is poor, improving it first is a condition of the grant and makes the heat pump work properly.

Vaillant is a well-established manufacturer with a track record in the UK domestic heating market. The installation partner, Home Heating Services (Scotland) Ltd, designs the system to suit your property and handles the full installation, MCS certification and any grant paperwork. They hold MCS certification (IAA10151), TrustMark registration (3559930) and Gas Safe registration (559575).
Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme apply in Scotland?
No. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is England and Wales only.
If you have read about the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and its £7,500 voucher, that is an England and Wales programme administered by Ofgem. It does not apply in Scotland. Scotland's route to a heat pump grant is through Home Energy Scotland, which offers up to £7,500 (up to £9,000 with the rural uplift) plus the optional interest-free loan. The amounts are similar, but the application process and the administering body are different.

We check your postcode, heating type and property suitability. The rural uplift depends on location — we confirm whether your postcode qualifies.
Apply through Home Energy Scotland
The grant application goes through Home Energy Scotland. You have nine months from the date of the written offer to complete the installation and claim the grant.
Survey and installation by our partner
Home Heating Services (Scotland) Ltd surveys the property and installs the Vaillant heat pump. They hold MCS certification, TrustMark registration and Gas Safe registration.
Solar is not right for every Paisley home
