Solar panels and batteries for Paisley and Renfrewshire homes

Written quotes, surveyed and installed by an MCS-certified installation partner. And straight away, the thing everybody says first: yes, it rains here. Panels run on daylight, not sunshine — Paisley has kept its own daily weather record since 1884, so nobody has to guess.

Why is Paisley better for solar than people think?

Because panels run on daylight, not sunshine, and Paisley has more of it than most people assume.

Renfrewshire's first objection is always the weather. The Coats Observatory on Oakshaw has recorded daily weather data since 1884, and that record shows Paisley gets enough daylight across the year for most south-, east- or west-facing roofs. Output on a grey day is lower, but it is not zero — and Scotland's cooler air temperatures actually improve panel efficiency compared with the hotter south.

The network operator for Renfrewshire is SP Energy Networks (SP Distribution), not SSEN. Every installation requires a G98 or G99 notification to SPEN, and our installation partner handles that paperwork on your behalf.

On the grant side: Paisley, Renfrew, Johnstone and Erskine do not qualify for the £1,500 rural uplift on the heat pump grant. But parts of rural Renfrewshire out past Lochwinnoch and Howwood do, where oil and LPG heating still persists in farmhouses, steadings and cottages on the Renfrewshire hill edge. We check the postcode rather than guessing.

Paisley has kept a daily weather record — rainfall, sunshine, temperature and wind — without a break since 1884, at the Coats Observatory on Oakshaw. It is one of the few towns in Scotland that can say exactly what its own sky has done for well over a century. We mention it for one reason: solar panels run on daylight, not on sunshine. A flat grey day in Renfrewshire still generates. Less than June, but it generates, and the hours below are the ones your roof actually gets.

How does a Paisley solar quote work?

Three steps: you tell us about your home, the installation partner surveys it, and you receive a written proposal.

Tell us about your home

Fill in the short form or call us. We ask about your roof, your electricity usage and what you are interested in. Takes about two minutes.

Survey by our installation partner

Home Heating Services (Scotland) Ltd visits your property at no cost. They check the roof structure, orientation, shading, the consumer unit and the best route for cables. They hold the MCS certification, not us.

Your written proposal

You receive a written proposal with exact costs, projected savings and a timeline. The illustrative ranges on this site become a fixed price once the surveyor has seen the roof.

Solar is not right for every Paisley home

We would rather tell you now than waste your time with a survey.

  • Your only roof faces north with no east or west option
  • A neighbouring tenement or tree shades the roof for most of the day
  • You are in a flat without roof rights or the required consent from other owners
  • The building is listed and you do not want to apply for listed-building consent
  • You are moving within two years and the payback period would not begin

Common questions about solar in Paisley

Do solar panels work in Paisley with all the rain?
Yes. Panels generate electricity from daylight, not direct sunshine. Output on an overcast day is lower than in full sun, but it is not zero. Scotland's cooler temperatures actually improve panel efficiency. Paisley has kept its own daily weather record since 1884 at the Coats Observatory on Oakshaw — the data shows the town gets enough daylight to make solar viable on most south-, east- or west-facing roofs. A south-facing 4kWp system here produces around 3,300–3,800 kWh a year.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Paisley?
Usually not. Most domestic installations are permitted development. However, if your property is in a conservation area — Oakshaw, the Abbey and town centre, Castlehead, or the mill conservation areas — or is a listed building, panels on a visible elevation may need planning or listed-building consent from Renfrewshire Council. We check this before a survey is booked.
What about tenements and shared roofs?
You need consent from all roof owners, which is the most common reason a Paisley enquiry cannot proceed. If you live in a flat in a tenement or converted mill building, the roof is almost certainly shared. Solar panels on that roof need the agreement of the other owners through the factor or owners' association. We check this before booking a survey rather than wasting anyone's time.
Is there a grant for solar panels in Scotland?
No. The Home Energy Scotland grant for solar panels and batteries closed in June 2024. There is no Scottish Government grant for domestic solar or battery installations. The heat pump grant remains open.
How long does a solar installation take?
Most domestic installations are completed in a single day. The time from your first enquiry to installation day depends on survey availability and any planning requirements, but is typically four to eight weeks.
What happens to the electricity I do not use?
Surplus electricity is exported to the grid. Under the Smart Export Guarantee, your energy supplier pays you for each unit exported. Rates vary by supplier, roughly 4p to 25p per kWh. We help you register once the system is commissioned.
Who actually installs the panels?
Our installation partner, Home Heating Services (Scotland) Ltd. They hold MCS certification (IAA10151), TrustMark registration (3559930) and Gas Safe registration (559575). Solar Panels Paisley is an advisory and quotation service — we do not carry out installations ourselves.
