Why does a battery matter at 56°N?
Because Paisley's summer days are long and its winter days are short — a battery shifts the surplus across the day and the season.
At Paisley's latitude, midsummer brings over 17 hours of daylight and a solar system will generate far more electricity than a household uses during the day. Without a battery, that surplus is exported to the grid at rates of roughly 4p to 25p per kWh. With a battery, it is stored and used in the evening when you would otherwise be buying from the grid at around 28p per kWh.
In winter, the picture reverses. Daylight hours shrink and solar output drops. A battery cannot solve the winter shortfall on its own, but it allows you to charge overnight on off-peak tariffs at around 7p per kWh and use that stored electricity during the day instead of paying the full daytime rate. Over a year, this combination — summer surplus storage and winter off-peak charging — is what makes a battery-paired system work at this latitude.
Daylight hours in Paisley by month
The long summer days generate the surplus a battery banks for the evening. The short winter days are when off-peak overnight charging matters most.

What tariffs does a battery unlock?
The gap between 28p daytime import and 7p off-peak is the saving a battery creates.
Before a battery and solar system, most households buy all their electricity at the standard daytime rate — around 28p per kWh. After installation, three things change: you generate your own during the day, you store the surplus instead of exporting it cheaply, and you can charge the battery overnight at off-peak rates of around 7p per kWh.
Surplus electricity you do not use or store is exported to the grid under the Smart Export Guarantee. Export rates vary by supplier, roughly 4p to 25p per kWh. The off-peak and export tariffs are what the installation unlocks — they are not your current rates.
Illustration — not a promise
A household using 10 kWh per day, shifting 6 kWh from the 28p daytime rate to off-peak at 7p, saves roughly £460 a year on that shift alone. Add self-consumption of solar generation and export income and the total saving is higher. These figures assume energy prices rise by at least 10% a year — stated openly as an assumption, not a guarantee. Actual savings depend on your usage pattern, tariff and system size.
What battery do you specify?
Duracell Dura5, with Tesla Powerwall 3 and Pylontech US5000 as alternatives.
The primary battery in our specifications is the Duracell Dura5. For homes that need higher capacity or where installation constraints require a different form factor, Tesla Powerwall 3 and Pylontech US5000 are acceptable alternatives. We do not specify GivEnergy products.
Battery warranties are per the manufacturer's terms, up to 12 years. We do not extend or modify the manufacturer's warranty. The installation partner advises on the right capacity at survey — typically 5–10 kWh for a Paisley semi-detached, more for larger detached properties.
If your home has a hot-water tank, a solar iBoost diverter can be added to use surplus solar generation to heat water. This is the one part of a solar system that directly reduces a gas or oil bill rather than an electricity bill.

Solar is not right for every Paisley home
We would rather tell you now than waste your time with a survey.
- You have no solar panels and no plan to install them — a battery alone rarely pays for itself without a generation source or a time-of-use tariff
- Your electricity usage is very low and the savings would not justify the outlay
- You do not have space for a battery unit — typically the size of a small fridge, wall-mounted in a garage, utility room or loft
- You are moving within two years

Panels in Renfrewshire collect moss, lichen and mill-town grime that rain alone doesn't shift, and the west of Scotland gives you plenty of the diffuse light that makes every clean cell count. A patch of shading on one cell can run hot enough to damage it permanently. Scottish Energy Efficiency runs a monitoring and care plan; details and prices are on the main site.
