How does an air source heat pump work?

It moves heat from the outside air into your heating and hot water, using electricity to run.

An outdoor unit draws heat from the air, even on cold days, and transfers it into your radiators or underfloor heating and a hot water cylinder. It replaces a gas, oil or LPG boiler and runs on electricity.

Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures than a boiler, so they work best when the home holds its heat. They tend to run for longer at a steady temperature rather than in short bursts.

Will a heat pump suit my Paisley home?

Often yes, if the home is reasonably insulated and there is space for an outdoor unit — the survey confirms it.

Paisley has a wide mix of housing — sandstone tenements, interwar semis, 1960s and 1970s estates and modern new builds. The key requirement is adequate insulation: cavity wall, loft insulation and double glazing at a minimum. If insulation is poor, improving it first makes the heat pump work properly.

Some radiators may need upsizing to deliver enough heat at lower flow temperatures, and you will usually need room for a hot water cylinder. Flats can be harder where there is no suitable outdoor space or where consent is needed from other owners.

Is a heat pump the right move for oil or LPG homes in Renfrewshire?

For many oil- and LPG-heated homes with reasonable insulation, it is worth a survey.

Oil and LPG heating persists in rural Renfrewshire — Lochwinnoch, Howwood, the edges of Kilbarchan, the farms and steadings above Neilston and Uplawmoor. These homes are off the gas grid and their fuel costs can be volatile, which is why many owners look at a heat pump when the boiler is due for replacement.

We will tell you honestly if a heat pump does not suit your home, or if insulation work should come first.

What heat pump do you specify?

The make and size are chosen after the survey and confirmed on your written quote.

The system is designed around your home's heat loss, hot water needs and the space available for the outdoor unit and cylinder. We install through MCS-certified partners. Warranty and guarantee terms are confirmed in writing on your quotation.

How does getting a heat pump work?

Three steps: tell us about your home, a home survey, then a written quote and installation.

Tell us about your home

We ask about your property type, current heating, insulation and how you use your heating, so we can say early on whether a heat pump is likely to suit.

Home survey

A heat loss survey looks at insulation, radiators, hot water needs and where the outdoor unit can sit. The system is sized to your home, not a rule of thumb.

Written quote and installation

You get a written quote with the system specification. We install through MCS-certified partners. Warranty and guarantee terms are confirmed in writing on your quotation.

Solar is not right for every Paisley home

We would rather tell you now than waste your time with a survey.

  • Your home is on mains gas in Paisley, Renfrew, Johnstone or Erskine and your boiler is less than 10 years old — switching now may be harder to justify
  • You live in a flat where there is no space for an outdoor unit or where the owners' association will not consent
  • The property does not have adequate insulation and you are not willing to improve it first — a heat pump in a poorly insulated home will not perform well
  • You want the job done without a home survey — we will not recommend a heat pump without one

How can I pay for a heat pump?

Interest-free credit up to £30,000, subject to status. Priced at survey and confirmed on your written quote.

The cost depends on your home's heat loss, the system size and any radiator or hot water changes. You get a written quote after the survey so you know the full price before deciding.

Heat pump installations currently carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.

Heat pump questions

How do I get a quote?
Call us on 0141 230 0198 or fill in the quote form. We book a no-obligation survey, then send a written quote with the full system specification and price.
Can I add a heat pump to an existing system?
Yes, a heat pump can replace a gas, oil or LPG boiler. A heat loss survey checks insulation, radiators and hot water needs so the system is sized to your home. We install through MCS-certified partners.
Is a heat pump suitable for a rural Renfrewshire home?
For many off-gas homes in rural Renfrewshire with reasonable insulation, a heat pump is worth a survey. Oil and LPG fuel costs can be volatile, which is why many owners consider a heat pump when the boiler is due for replacement.
What heat pump do you specify?
Vaillant air source heat pumps. We install through MCS-certified partners, who design and install the system.
Can I add a battery to existing solar panels?
Yes. A battery can be retrofitted to an existing system. Compatibility with your current inverter and wiring is checked at survey. 0% VAT applies to batteries until 31 March 2027.
